IRISH WIND ENERGY IS LOCAL

IRISH WIND ENERGY IS SUPPORTING COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

  • Wind farms have been operating safely in Ireland since 1992, when the first commercial wind farm was constructed in Bellacorrick, Co. Mayo. Today there are almost 200 wind farms in Ireland.
  • Local communities also benefit directly with rates of approximately €15 million paid directly to local councils in 2014, and the communities hosting wind farms often benefit directly from community commitments which have been used for local causes such as sports club improvements, to energy efficiency projects, and support for a wide variety of community projects.
  • The need for safe and secure infrastructure means that where wind farms are being developed local road and infrastructure are often improved at no cost to the local community.
